Worms, veggies and space: another rambling post

So after driving around Alameda we found our destination --the worm guy. Mike, I think that was his name, was the quintessential Berkeley hippy. He had many incongruous layers of clothing on, his silver streaked hair was up on a bun near his forehead and his fingerless gloves were worn. I couldn't say more than he was Eastern European based on his accent and definitely belong in the hippy world --as his socialist and nature-loving talks lead me to believe.

Mike loves his worms and he does a LOT of composting --he even gave us tips about new enclosures we can make this summer as the worm population grows. We got way more than the expected 1000 worms, along with other critters and they are happily living in a holey plastic box on my deck. Claudia and Marcus are both iffy about the other bugs, but Claudia does want to be present as I feed the worms.

As for the farmer's: I could not make it, but Claudia and Cindy both did. So now we have our delish and pretty mix of salad greens with flowers (I love me some edible flowers), assorted citrus and raw milk. Marcus ended up giving some to Claudia, even though she had plenty of her own milk!! Now I will be some what short for my Crispix  :(  Tis ok, I think I should survive with one less bowl of cereal for dessert this week.

Marcus didn't want to put the worm box under the kitchen window because it would require that he move a couple of items, so instead it is in the middle of the deck : P  Maybe this weekend I can go ahead and move them --but they are heavy, silly little worms. I haven't started ANY seeds, so I better get my butt in gear this week and at least sprout some. Ale gave me the best tip for bio-degradable containers: toilet paper rolls! Cut the roll into 1inch rounds, add dirt and seed and voila! You can just put them into the ground. The paper degrades and the roots grow down. Cheaper than buying peat cups. So if anyone local wants to save some toilet paper and paper towel rolls for me...

Enough procrastinating, I better get back to Langacker and the usage-based model of language.

ps Anyone want to help my garden this year? I have plenty of space and I want to grow a ton of stuff but I need 1. Extra hands and 2. Extra stomachs to help eat it all. Let me know
